Google chrome ad8/30/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() In the wake of ongoing backlash to the proposal, Chrome software security engineer Chris Palmer took to Twitter this week to claim the move was intended to help improve the end-user browsing experience, and paid enterprise users would be exempt from the changes. While some extensions, like AdBlock, already use the latter, developers say the overall result will be tools that simply don’t work quite as well overall. But Google’s proposal would require extensions use the declarativeNetRequest API, which leaves it to the browser to decide what gets blocked based on a list of predetermined rules. The extension development community didn’t respond well, and said the changes would harm many popular user tools.Ĭurrently, many Chrome adblock extensions use Chrome's webRequest API, letting users block ads before they even reach the browser. Under these changes, Google said it would be modifying permissions and other key aspects of Chrome’s extensions system. However, it also makes me a bit uneasy as well.Last year, Google began hinting at some changes to Chrome’s extension system as part of its Manifest V3 proposal. Now that a few of those options are available on Chrome, I feel more in control. I remember reviewing a list of topics and other information Google has on me from a URL. You can enable or disable these settings to control the type and category of ads you see while using Google Chrome. Ad Measurement – Allows sites and advertisers to measure the performance of their ads.Site-suggested ads – Ads based on your activity on a website after visiting it.They generate this list using your browsing history. Ad Topics – Enables Chrome to show you advertisements based on the topics you are interested in.The new ad privacy settings section is available under Privacy & security. To measure the performance of an ad, limited types of data are shared between sites, such as the time of day an ad was shown to you. You can choose which topics and sites are used to show you ads. Later, sites can ask for this information to show you personalized ads. ![]() Also, sites you visit can determine what you like.
